This is a nice vintage US Forest Service standard pocket compass in its original wooden case. Made by Eugene Dietzgen Co.
The directions on the compass face read: The weight is on the south end of the needle. Sight along the line on the cover and read the north end of the needle. This will give the magnetic bearing. Allow for the variation if necessary.
The fourth photo shows the view if sighting down the white line on the lid and the white arrow is pointing to south, which is the direction I was looking when I took the photo. I think this works as it should, but It is being sold as-is with no guarantees.
Condition: The metal compass face has some discoloration. The glass in front is free of scratches. The case still latches and locks securely. The number 17 is etched into the top of the lid. There are some normal use scratches to the box and a stain on the bottom as shown.
