Antique 1903 Chief Pau Puk Keewis Photo, Iroquois, Ojibwas, Detroit Photographic Publishing Co

Sorry, this item has sold.

An antique 1903 photo of Chief Pau Puk Keewis by Detroit Photographic Company, later Publishing Co. The photo measures 7" x 9" tall and comes framed in what appears to be its original frame with beaded border. The bottom gold lettering reads: 54059 Chief Paupuk Keewis, Iroquois Adopted by the Ojibwas". The photo has been mounted on a board, which I don't know if this was done later or is original to the photo. There is some wear to the very edge of the photo from being in the frame for years. The frame has lots of wear to the black paint. I've included information below, found on the internet of the photo process used to create this type of color photo.

The unique Photochrom process looks like a color photo but color photography hadn't even been invented yet in 1899. Photochrom prints are ink-based images produced through the direct photographic transfer of an original black and white photographic negative onto multiple litho and chromographic printing plates. Each plate printed a different color onto the final image resulting in a color image that looked remarkably lifelike.
The Detroit Photographic Company originated in 1898 to promote a new color printing process in the United States and to capitalize on the public's interest in sending inexpensive pictorial greetings. In 1905 the firm became the Detroit Publishing Company, continuing to use the trade name "Phostint" for its patented color reproduction process. Western landscape photographer William Henry Jackson was long associated with the firm, bringing his and other photographers' negatives to the image stock published by the company.
