Original E.W. Currier Watercolor Painting of San Fransico China Town, 1901 Edward Wilson California Painting in Original Frame

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is an Original Edward Wilson Currier watercolor painting of San Francisco China Town dated 1901 and signed E.W. Currier in its original frame.

Born in Marietta, Ohio on Oct. 11, 1857, the son of lithographer Charles Jacob Currier and nephew of Nathaniel Currier of Currier & Ives. Edward's art studies were at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and with G. L. Clough in New York. He settled in San Francisco in 1882 into a studio in the old "Monkey Block" (now the Transamerica Pyramid) which housed many other local artists. Working in oil and watercolor, his subjects include landscapes, coastal scenes, still life's, views of San Francisco, and an occasional seascape. Much of his early work was lost in the earthquake and fire of 1906. Currier died at his studio-home at 1002 Ellis Street on Nov. 15, 1918.

This painting measures about 7.25" x 5.0" and the frame measures about 13" x 11" to the outside edges. There's some slight damage to the frame, at bottom right corner and top left where it has been chipped, and the backing paper and board are a little loose at top half, but this did allow me to put my finger in to feel the art work and make sure it is original. I could also tell by looking at it, but just to be sure I did. The white spots you see in the photos on glass are just reflection, not damage or scuffing or anything.

Also attached to back by someone years ago, is a newspaper article about buildings being torn down in San Francisco and the tenants reluctance etc. A nice piece of original art by a listed and well known artist.
